07 January 2011

let the race begin.

it's about that time of the year again. The Golden Globe nominations are out. The Oscars are announced soon. Time to speculate about something totally out of our control.
We're gunning for True Grit and Black Swan to bring it home this year.

But who isn't really? Right? Unless you saw Black Swan and couldn't sleep for like three weeks.

If you haven't seen these flicks, get your butt to Sunset Place, the Grove (but reserve your seats!), or Lincoln Road ASAP.

I'm not sure if The Kids Are Alright, that has been buzzing all that Oscar buzz, is playing anywhere here, or going to be re-released, but I really hated that movie. Remember my scathing review from the summer? So skip that one while you're ahead.

bimmer, benz or bentley? benz, chris benz

First of all, google says that's how you spell "bee-mer." Weird, right? Second, go with Benz if you dig these sweet looks.

Don't you just die for those little tassles around the waist?

boozy and beautiful

hoy como thursday

Honestly, when are we going to start making some moolah for plugging local businesses? Whatever, we'll do it for free for Hoy Como Ayer.
I waited to post this until today, because posting it last Thursday I figured that you'd forget by next Thursday, but posting it right now means you can send some texts, get a crew together, or just go alone to jam out at Hoy Como Ayer on Thursdays for the Spam All Stars.
Need some convincing? Look how much fun these nicers had:

shoot up the streets

i've reposted The Sartorialists photos here a whole bunch of times (like here, here, and here). He's the man behind the street style phenomenon that had become ubiquitous over the web (actually, here's a fun fact J.Azze and I were stopped in NY by A Bird in My Closet- it's hilarious and embarassing so obviously I'd post it here), and as those things go, the spin-off just aren't as good as the original (except his beau Garance who I've also posted a bunch of times).
A quick google search yields no real results of a Miami Street Style blog of it's own. There are a few sites that haven't been updates since 2009, but nothing new and nothing interesting that I can see (do any of you know of one?! please share!).
Perhaps this little film of the man behind the myth will inspire someone to start a street style blog of their own (and share it with miami nice!):

some hot dogs deserve a philosophy

I'll let the photos speak for themselves on this one. If you like hot dogs, and probably even if you don't, you'll love Dogma. Go on a pretty day because there are no indoor seats, order a cold one, and a hot dog... or two.

troy of gottadancedirty.com talks to miami nice

miami nice has a few words with Troy Kurtz, the Miami based branch of gottadancedirty.com and the man behind the new Thursday night party at Coco de Ville. If you're a regular miami nice reader, you know that we don't really do the party scene, don't get me wrong, we love a good party, but it's not really our thing. But, new contributor GuarchIII brought this electronic music blog's message to our attention and we knew we wanted a quick chat:

Before we start can you give us a quick overview of the blog GottaDanceDirty.com?
GottaDanceDirty is an electronic music blog that in a few years has become one of the most highly read and respected in the world of electronic music lovers. The blog started in LA, but has 10 contributors that live in San Francisco, London, myself here in Miami, and the rest in LA. We're also the #1 most followed blog on Hype Machine.

On to the local stuff: Can you tell us a little about this Coco's Habit event and some of the other events you and the Overthrow group are holding in Miami?

Coco's Habit is just a month old, which takes place every Thursday at Coco de Ville on South Beach. Pirate Stereo and myself are the resident DJs, and with the Overthrow backing, we were given the opportunity to curate a real groovy vibe. We play pretty much everything from nu-disco to dubstep.

You mention the South Beach vs. Downtown aspect of Miami nightlife, and for the most part the causeways do separate the two, so why bridge the gap?

South Beach is a very over-saturated market of redundancy. The more popular clubs pretty much look, sound, and feel exactly the same, except for the name that changes them. However, there are a few places that are starting to expand their horizons. And with that comes a demand for good creative direction. When you properly bring a downtown mentality to a South Beach venue, you can create a nice little fusion.

Are there any other events, locations, or people or influencers we should all know about?

Overthrow's next big party is taking place on January 15th at Eve (formerly White Room) with UK dubstep producer named Jakwob. Eve has been totally remolded and is supposed to sound pretty mental, so I'm sure he'll test out the new speakers right nice. Alongside him will be Caligula, Pirate Stereo, Gooddroid, Magoula, and myself.

Seriously, what is up with that "Jersey Shore, Ed Hardy, bottle sale douchebaggery" (as your site puts it)?

I'm hoping the Jersey Shore fad dies out quickly in 2011. I really can't wrap my mind around the notion of wanting look like the national icon of mockery.

Some people think the music scene in Miami is starting to turn around. What's it turning from and turning to?
This goes back to the Downtown vs South Beach thing again. I don't think the music scene downtown left. You can go out to any number of venues and hear good music. But South Beach is a different story. A few years ago I'd say most clubs formatted their nights to a predominately hip-hop set, whereas now you hear more electronic music slipping in. For the most part, the music scene on the beach is rank. You have to really pick your spots and nights wisely. If there has been one thing I have noticed, its been the overwhelming acceptance of dubstep, which blows my mind. You're also starting to see drum n bass come back, as well as some real deep chicago style house vibes.
How does Miami compare to other places in terms of DJ'ing? Any favorite places to play when you're here?
Miami is definitely a fun city to DJ in, especially when its a big week like Art Basel or WMC because people are especially fired up. My favorite places that I've DJ'd would have to be either in Toronto or LA. The crowds in both places really knew electronic music and were open to hearing new sounds. Miami is slow when it comes to pushing new sounds. But I've had a couple shows at Electric Pickle that have been second to none. The upstairs room is real dark and small and has a phenomenal sound system. If more clubs put emphasis on their sound you'd have a lot more happy DJs.

Thanks Troy, for chatting with us about what's nice and what's not in the Miami music scene. We hope to see you all at Coco de Ville on Thursday nights where you can expect to hear some serious jams brought to you by the gottadancedirty team. Oh, and for the record, we're with you, the Jersey Shore thing should be over in 2011.

our wynwood/design district adventure caravan field trip.

yesterday, the miami nice team took a field trip. A caravan of about twelve of us (I can clarify, for honesty's sake, that these are really just like ten friends, contributor, S.Darna and I) manned with two really big cameras, a pair of feather earrings, a puppy that weighs 2 pounds, and two out-of-town visitors stampeded the streets of Wynwood and the Design District.
What does this mean for all you nicers? Tons of new and really interesting stuff, duh. You'll be seeing a lot of (more on that later)s in this overview post.
if you haven't ventured into the Wynwood area during the day and have only been for ArtWalk (I;m going to assume by this point that you have all listened and been the the rawest cultural activity this city has seen for locals in a long long time, if not, there's always THIS SATURDAY) I couldn't recommend more highly jumping in the car, heading to the 20's and NE 2nd Ave and just exploring.
We had no agenda, no schedule, and really no ideas other than to eventually make it to the Wynwood Walls. First we had some sick dogs at Dogma (more on that later). Then we jumped back in the car and as we drove past NE 29th Street and N. Miami Ave I screamed "Stop the car!" Just like in the movies. I'd spotted the three black silhouettes of Las Tias Upscale Vintage and Consignment store and knew we had to stop in there (but more on that later too). The kind people there gave us a map of the area and we gallery hopped a bit, spotted some cool shit that's opening soon (more on that later too), and moved on.

We finally found the Wynwood Walls after seeing some other really cool graffiti walls in Wynwood (what walls aren't cool graffiti walls in Wynwood?). We saw the walls, went to Plant the Future (yes, again), checked out a multi sensory playground that's opening soon for kids (and wished we were kids still... more on that later too).

Then we headed uptown to the 40's. Our friends Andy and Prince work in the area, so they gave us some insider's insight. We were totally famished and in need of some caffeine, but that's not the best area for that or we would have had to splurge at Micheal's Genuine. So we carried on, that's when I spotted this amazing necklace at Maison Martin Margiela. We saw that giant living room bus stop landmark and called it a day. Until we went to Stonegroove at Vagabond (more on that later).

would you wear

a necklace of a pearl necklace?
This necklace comes from the genius mind of Maison Martin Margiela (click here for our write-up on the designer and the Design District Store).

Last Night's Violent Miami T-shirt Spottings

Trendspotting?

Last night at the Vagabond's Stone Groove the miami nice team spotted both of these t's and had to snap pics to share. "Crime Pays" and Marlins logo with a gun instead of a fish? What can this mean? Is there something in the Miami ethos that's yearning for the Miami of the Time article we posted yesterday? or maybe it's just some good old fashioned gangsta shit?
Either way these shirts rep Miami pretty hard and we dig it.
Word on the street is there's a Heat shirt with a grenade as Burnie's body? Anyone seen it?

old miami, a good ol' time

Here's a 1981 article from Time Magazine about Miami's transition from a sunny grandparent's paradise to the city that saw 70% of the drugs in the country go through it.
and here's a picture of some people looking cool taken from here.

today in obnoxious highbrow stuff (that I'm really jealous of)

soho House Miami. The Soho House was the place to see and be seen during Basel, and who can blame the celebutante crowd for chilling out at a place with fringed umbrellas and magical lanterns dripping around the outdoor dining room and pool? Oh, it's only accessible to members of Soho House chain? That's explains why everyone wanted to be there and why I'm terribly jealous.

etsy roundup take 2

etsy is an arts and crafts marketplace online, much like an ebay, but all for people who make stuff to sell it. Over the summer we did a round-up of our favorite local sellers by using their "search local" feature. Back then I complained about how absolutely terrible the results were of the search. I found only a few sellers that had any quality goods. The plethora of bows, crocheted shit, quilted baby bags, and generally crappy shit that looks like bad Christmas gifts from your "crafty" tia or abuelita. It's a sad sad sight of a site.
But, that makes it all the easier to pick the highlights. There aren't many, but the ones features here are really wonderful goods being made in studios, backyards, garages, and on dining room tables all over Miami.
