miami by didion

joan didion is a literary beacon of our time, and she just keeps on coming out with books worthy of reading again and again.

One of her lesser known pieces of this Californian New Yorker's long form journalism is "Miami" published in 1987- it's a must read for any local history enthusiast or anyone who knows how to read.
I'll be posting quotes from this great piece of local literature for the next week.

"Some were American citizens and some would never be, but they were all Cuban first, and they proceeded equally from a kind of collective spell, an occult enchantment, from that febrile complex of resentments and revenges and idealizations and taboos which renders exile so potent an organizing principle. They shared not just Cuba as a birthplace but Cuba as a construct, the idea of birthright lost. They shared the definition of patria as indivisible from personal honor, and therefore of personal honor as that which had been betrayed and must be revenged."
Joan Didion, Miami

social media week miami, that's #smwmiami to you

in honor of the events happening around the city for Social Media Week Miami we decided to do a search on our latest venture into social media Pinterest.

First of all, we're proud to say that we're trendsetters, if you search "miami" under people on Pinterest it's us and HuffPost Miami alone.

Second, we know that in this bandwagon city, that won't last long.

Third, here's a round-up of "Miami" pins.

happy pinning. and don't forget to follow us.

#comidacoma

sra. Martinez has long been on the foodie scene around here. With good reason. If you are hungry, go here. If you have a date to impress, this is the place. If you are getting your parents to foot the bill, check please.

Three things to order for brunch.
croquetas with jamon serrano, queso manchego, and fig marmalade.
huevos benedicto. cuban toast, crispy pork belly, poached eggs, mojo hollandaise.
not mentioned on the menu was the delicious fried cheese smack in the middle of this sucker, making it a grilled cheese, pork belly benedicto. The mojo hollandaise wasn't what I expected, which was heavier on the garlicky side, lighter on the lemony tang, but it was delicious nonetheless.
Fried chicken and waffles.
a classic somewhere.

we took some great interior shots with our new camera (yee haw!) but we accidently deleted them.
The trials of technology. Luckily, our trusty iPhone pics were still on hand.
Look out for better pictures in the future.

pinecrest garden's farmer's market

every sunday at the old Parrot Jungle you can find jams, raw food, smoked fish, fruits and vegetables and some stuff that's really sugary too.
Copperpot's has a great slogan:
Slow down and jam on.
Their website recommends modernizing your
pan con bistec with their red onion marmalade (bottom left). Oh snap.
Heads up, it closes around two, so club rats drink your
Vitamin Water and head over before your 4 PM wake time.

o'grime get's grimey

youngin' rap group O'Grime's album "Pearl Necklace" drops today. The irreverent spirit and humor that's quintessentially grimey, isn't traditional Valentine's day hugs and kisses... it's more... pearl necklace and Taco Bell. They'll explain.

miami nice talks to O'Grime...
o' grime by mel d. cole

Let’s get the basics out of the way. What and who is OGrime and where about in Miami do you represent? Tell me about yourselves.
O'GRIME IS L.REY AND NIKO. WE REPRESENT ALL OF MIAMI NIKO IS FROM NORTH MIAMI AND L.REY FROM HIALEAH. WE MET IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND WE'VE BEEN YOPPIN EATING HOT CHEETOS EVER SINCE

Not to be cheesy, but who are your influences?
MARC ANTHONY, BIRDMAN, BUCKETHEAD, JIMI HENDRIX, BASSNECTAR

Based off your tumblr posts, its seems like you guys are into boobs, planking, Cheetos. Anything else?
FIRST OFF THE CHEETOS GOTTA BE HOT FLAMIN CRUNCHY. ASIDES FROM THAT, GREEZING, WATER CUPS OF BAJA BLAST, DOME ON THE METRORAIL, ROLLIN UP, EDITING, GETTING FADED IN A PARKING LOT

Your video for Taco Bell Swag made me want to vomit and then drive straight to taco bell and order a chalupa. There were tacos between butt cheeks in thongs with cellulite, Taco Bell showers, oh, and giant guns. I’ve heard that you guys throw Taco Bell at your audiences. First, doesn’t that seem like a waste of tacos? Second, what’s the deal with Taco Bell? Do you have  go-to location?
DON'T WORRY OUR TACO GAME STAYS UP. CHEESE ROLL UPS STAY ON DECK, 5 DOLLAR BOXES FOR BREAKFAST. IT'S A LIFESTYLE NOT JUST A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. WE DON'T HAVE JUST ONE GO TO SPOT, WE'RE GOOD AT ANY T.BELL. BELIEVE THAT

What is the affiliation with Marlon Preuss and his art work?
MARLON PREUSS IS THE YOUNG PROSPECT, WE ARE GLAD TO HAVE HIM IN THE YOPPAZ TEAM. HE HAS COLLABED WITH NIKO ON BOTH OF OUR ALBUM COVERS. WE ARE WORKING ON SOMETHING NEW AS WE SPEAK IT NEVER STOPS. SHOUTOUT YUNG LINK!!
So what’s in store for OGrime? What are you doing next and what would you do if you could do anything?
WE'RE DROPPING "PEARL NECKLACE" ON VALENTINES DAY! IF WE COULD BE DOING ANYTHING, WE'D BE IN THE STUDIO MAKING TRACKS, EATING TACOS, AND GETTING FADED. SHOUTOUT TO METRO ZU, RAIDER KLAN AND VILLAGE SOUTH!! MUPALIA PICTURES.. YOPPPPP!!!!

forget therapy, throw a tomato or ten thousand

tobacco road flying tomato bash.
last saturday.

miss pepper and miami nice keep your (last minute) valentine's nice.

um... it's the day before Valentine's Day. That's right procrastinating males and females alike, tomorrow is dia de los enamorados and you've still got nada. Girls, you remembered something for your boo but not for your other lovies, mom, bff, secret admirer? Boys, seriously, how are you supposed to sort through piles of junk and metal that's supposed to be romantic?

You go to Miss Pepper in South Miami, pick up a pan con bistec next door and a cortadito, because the miami nice x Miss Pepper shopping guide does all the work for you.
adorable and affordable fruity little key chains
skully bracelets for the anti-valentine's day bud
go on and say it already, "I love you" via necklace
or, go with a more subtle message and just send a jewelry hug and a kiss
then there are all of these, including the Thomas Paul canvas accessories for the stylish male in your life. Stuff it with a little love note, an IOU or a gift card.

AND DON'T FORGET YOUR MIAMI NICE ONLY-IN-MIAMI TARJETICAS.
made in miami and available in "Ay Candela," "You're Super Dope," "It's Cosquilla Day," "We Go Together Like Cafe con Leche,"
and "Solo Por Ti."
